WebMail Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Eudora, Netscape, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or other POP3 clients? If so, how do I configure them?

To Configure Eudora

Click on Tools >>> Options >>>Click on Getting Started on the Category side of the screen|>>> Type is your name in the name box. Type in your Return Address: youruserid@presby.edu . Type is your incoming mail server: mail.presby.edu, your login name (this is your userid), and your Outgoing mail server: mail.presby.edu. In the Category side of the screen, click on “Checking Mail” and make sure the mail server, mail.presby.edu, is in the mail server box and your userid is in the “Login Name” box. Type in the number of minutes that you want Eudora to check the server for new mail. Click on the incoming mail icon under the category side of the screen. Click on “POP”as the server configuration. Authentication style should be “password” Click on Sending Mail in the category side of the screen. Make sure that your return address is present and that your SMTP server is mail.presby.edu.

To configure Netscape:
Click on Edit >>> Preferences >>> Mail & Newsgroup >>> Identity Make sure your name is correct, type in your email addresss xxxx@presby.edu (xxxx=your userid). Click on mail servers. Look to the right of the screen. If you don’t already have an incoming mail server listed, click on add and type the name of your server, mail.presby.edu. The server type should be POP3. Type your userid and the user name. Click “ok”. You’ll be returned to the previous page. Look in the “Outgoing Mail Server” section: The Outgoing SMTP Server is mail.presby.edu. The outgoing mail server user name is your userid: Click on the Advanced Option at the bottom on the left side of the Preferences screen. Click on Cache. Look on the right side of the screen and find the option “Document in Cache is compared to document on Network.” Make sure you click in the Every time Box.
To configure Microsoft’s Outlook Express:
After opening Outlook Express >>> Click on Tools >>>Accounts >>> Mail If you have a mail account already configured, edit it by clicking on properties the right. Change your email address to xxxxx@presby.edu . (xxxx=your userid). Click on the “servers” tab. Both incoming POP3 and Outgoing SMTP should be set to mail.presby.edu. In the incoming mail server section, enter your userid for the account name. The name for the mail account prompt can be completed with any name you prefer.
To Configure Microsoft’s Outlook
After opening Outlook >>> Click on Tools >>>Services >>> Internet Mail If you have a mail account already configured, edit it by clicking on properties the right. Change your email address to xxxxx@presby.edu . (xxxx=your userid). Click on the “servers” tab. Both incoming POP3 and Outgoing SMTP should be set to mail.presby.edu. In the incoming mail server section, enter your userid for the account name. If you don’t have a mail account already configured, just fill in the prompts with the above parameters. The name for the mail account prompt can be completed with any name you prefer. TIP: It is a good idea to set the minimum time a client to check the server for new email to nothing less than every 15 mins.

Why do I get disconnected when I’m using the Web Interface?

When a web interface is implemented there are privacy issues that arise; therefore, in order to minimize the privacy risks, WebMail has been setup to disconnect a user if he/she has not click on a selection in the interface in 60 minutes. If you are getting disconnected while composing a long message in the web interface, it would be best if you composed the message in a word processor- Microsoft Word, WordPad, NotePad, or Write Now - and use the cut and paste utility to paste the message in the compose box.

I’m using Netscape. I can log in successfully from one location, but when I try to log in from my room, I keep getting an error message telling me that my password is incorrect. What’s wrong?

You need to change the cache preference in Netscape so that every time you use Netscape it compares your password with the password on the server. Please do the following to make the change to the Netscape’s preferences: Click on the Advanced Option at the bottom on the left side of the Preferences screen. Click on Cache. Look on the right side of the screen and find the option “Document in Cache is compared to document on Network.” Make sure you click in the Every time Box. Click ok.

I can log in fine from my room, but when I go to Springs, I can’t log in. What’s wrong?

When you go back to your room, log in via the web interface, click on settings, click on the use fixed address option, located in the first section at the top of the page, change the option from “yes” to “no”. By doing so, you be able to use the web interface from anywhere in the world.

How can I delete more than one message at a time?

You can accomplish multiple deletes by using the search feature in any mailbox you have open. Imagine that you have 200 messages in your inbox. 48 of the 200 messages are from your friend Tom Smith, and you’d like to get rid of all the messages from Tom. In order to get rid of Tom’s messages, put “Tom”, “Smith”, “Tom Smith”, or any part of his name that distinguishes him from someone else in the search box, located above the mailbox that you are currently in and click on display. Once the messages you want to display are shown on the screen, click in the “Mark All” button, located in the top right corner of the mailbox screen. Check marks should appear in the box to the left of the messages. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on “delete”. TIP: The default display setting is 30 messages, you can change that by clicking in the down arrow beside 30; therefore, in this case, change the message display count to 300.

How can I change my password?

After you log in, click on settings at the top or bottom of the screen, scroll to the bottom of the screen. You’ll see a password box that will allow you to change your password. Type in your current password, and your new password twice. Click on “modify”, log out, and log in again with your new password.
What is my email address?

Can I call someone to get help?

Why can’t I read an attachment that my friend sent me?

Your friend probably sent the attachment as a rich text formatted document. Ask your friend to resend it as a plain text document.

How can I attach a file on the Web Interface?

While in the compose section of the web interface, scroll to the bottom of the screen, and you’ll see three boxes with “attachment” on the left side them. Click on “browse” on the right side of the box and navigate to the location of the file that you want to attach and click on it.

Why can’t I see the Attachment boxes at the bottom of the Screen?
